Background:
Dr.Hoyos received his BS degree in Civil & Environmental
Engineering from the "Corporation Unicosta", Colombia, in 1988. During
the period of 1989-1990, he worked for the Colombian Department of
Transportation as a staff engineer, mainly on soil/pavement materials'
control and characterization. In 1991, he received an MS degree in
Highway Engineering from the "Universidad del Cauca", Colombia, and
worked as a research engineer at the Colombian Institute of Petroleum
on rheological characterization of bituminous materials. In 1992, he
joined the graduate program at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez
Campus, where he received an MS degree in Geotechnical Engineering in
1993. In 1994, he was given the opportunity to serve as a Teaching
Instructor in the same institution and as a research engineer in its
Civil & Environmental Engineering Infrastructure Center to conduct
research on dynamic characterization of residual soils. In September
1994, he joined the Geosystems program at the Georgia Institute of
Technology, where he received an MS degree in July 1996, and a PhD
degree in December 1998 with the doctoral dissertation "Experimental
and Computational Modeling of Unsaturated Soil Behaviour Under True
Triaxial Stress States". In this institution, he was distinguished with
the "1997 Sowers Distinguished Graduate Student Award" and the "1998
Outstanding PhD Graduate Award" in the College of Engineering. He was
offered a teaching and research post-doctoral fellowship award in the
same institution until August 1999. He is currently a post-doctoral
research associate at Louisiana State University. His research work has
been published in several issues of the ASCE Geotechnical Journal, ASTM
Soil Testing Journal, and International Conferences on Soil Mechanics'
topics and related. In January 2000, he joined the Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas, Arlington, as
an Assistant Professor in the area of Geotechnical Engineering.
